EMI DAY
The Media Center is completely open to the street, giving students a view to nature from Level 2 hallways. The window seat was a key feature to provide both prospect and refuge. Our interior design team discussed the possibility of connecting the two levels with a slide! Image copyright Mahlum Architects.

Timberland Middle School

In 2017, this 163,000 SF school won honorable mention in the High Performance Building Awards from the Energy Trust. With a budget of $61M, we designed a two-story school for 1100 students on a new suburban greenfield site near Beaverton, Oregon. Our team completed design and documentation at a neck-breaking speed of 9 months.

Our team faced many concerns from the district about safety and security measures, in which we had to complete potential active shooter diagrams to determine the size of the classroom relites and the height of the sills. Facilitating these sensitive conversations early on resulted in a colorful and transparent yet secure facility. The school is now a beacon for safety and disaster preparedness in the area and serves the new Cedar Mill community as a middle school for 1100 students. Image copyright Mahlum Architects.

In this beautifully day lit school, we studied everything from the ideal width of corridors for middle schoolers to safe relite size, and pushed to expose many of the seismic cross-bracing to be a teaching tool for sustainability and resiliency. Image copyright Mahlum Architects.

With a 14’ grade change between the north and south ends of the site, our team thought about school circulation as a salmon run, with eddies and nooks for students to hang out. Image copyright Mahlum Architects.

My contribution extended from schematic design, design development, rendering, interior detailing, BIM documentation through construction administration on site. My design solutions enhance collaboration: from the window seat, benches, swing doors, to the solar display kiosk, a digital display where students learn about the sustainable features of their building. This project was created in collaboration with Kurt Zenner, Alyssa Leeviraphan, Rene Berndt, Amy Noe, Sean Murphy, Ben Taylor, & Keyna Mulvaney at Mahlum Architects.
